Virginia Ann Dungan's Obituary
Virginia Ann Dungan, 85, of Lovettsville, VA, passed away on July 3, 2022, from natural causes while holding the hand of Megan, one of her beloved granddaughters.
Virginia, or Ginger as she was known to her friends, was born in Washington, D.C., to parents James P. and Anna C. Briggs. As the youngest of four children—and the only girl—she was loved and protected by her older brothers and, perhaps, doted on by her parents.
After high school, she went on to graduate from the Washington School for Secretaries. She excelled at writing and this served her well throughout her life including with the most meaningful field in which she worked and volunteered—the animal welfare field. In her teen years, she began caring for homeless cats and dogs at Peace Plantation Animal Sanctuary in Sterling, VA, and continued working for their humane treatment as the Treasurer of The Board of Directors of The National Humane Education Society until the day of her death. In her own words, she wrote:
“My humane journey into the wonderful world of animals … was predestined before my birth in 1937. (We are all shaped by forces outside of ourselves,) and it was my parents who …. By their example taught my three brothers and me to have compassion and empathy for all animals, birds, and sealife, as well as mankind, and to prevent their suffering and abuse. We were brought up to be vegetarians, and to this day, I have never eaten meat.”
Empathy and compassion for animals and people characterized Ginger’s life. As most of her family would tell you, she reached the stage of generativity many years ago. She gave to her mother, her three children, grandchildren and others—all that she could possibly give in life.
Ginger was predeceased by her husband, Robert Earl Dungan, and her eldest son, Michael E. Taylor. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine A. Fox of Lovettsville, VA; her youngest son, James D. Taylor of Hedgesville, WV; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews—and today, each of their worlds is a little less bright.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 15, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Union Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ginger’s memory to The Briggs Animal Adoption Center at www.baacs.org.
