William Francis Cashman's Obituary
WILLIAM FRANCIS CASHMAN, 80, of Ashburn, Virginia passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2022, in Leesburg, Virginia.
Born Sunday, July 12, 1942, in Malden, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late William Cashman and the late Helen Cashman.
William spent many years pursuing his education. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University, a Master of Applied Science from Yale University, and a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.
William spent more than thirty years as an Electrical Engineer working on satellite communication systems, space systems engineering, and program management. His work in this field gained him several awards including the NASA Apollo Achievement Award and NASA Lewis Award for his contributions to the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) Program. He also spent six years as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the State University of New York, Potsdam.
He was affiliated with many groups and fraternities, including the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Phi Sigma Kappa, Sigma XI, Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu. He was a Life Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE), and a Senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
William will be remembered by his loving wife, Joan Haggis Cashman, sons William Michael Cashman (Kathleen), and David John Cashman (Dawna), stepdaughter Christine Mary Rapoza (John), grandchildren Finian Cashman, Ronan Cashman, Angelina Cashman, Alexander Cashman, Olivia Cashman, Richard Cashman, step grandchildren Kyle Thomas, and Kassidy Thomas, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents William and Helen, brother Henry Cashman, sisters Helen Kelly Rychalski, and Norma Cashman Porter (Raymond).
A Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 10, 2022, at St. Theresa Catholic Church located at 21371 St. Theresa Lane, Ashburn, Virginia, 20147. The Funeral Mass will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person here, https://youtu.be/UwW6h2dIzfw. Interment will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church Cemetery, 101 Oakcrest Manor Drive NE, Leesburg, Virginia, 20176.
