Dear Family,
I was greatly saddened to learn today of Bill’s passing. When
I began sitting on the Circuit Court in Leesburg, I was privileged to meet and work with many able lawyers there one of whom was Bill. Not only was he a superior lawyer and commissioner of accounts, he was a warm and gracious person always welcoming to me. I always enjoyed his company when we were together, a true friend.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

My best memory of Bill was at Herndon high School fall of 1957 His Junior year he played Tackle in front of me. I was a part-time nearsighted running half back in a old fashion T three running back formation. In the huddle when they called the off tackle running play. Bill told me I just had to run to the line with the football. Sure , enough he cleared out the defensive lineman for me to run my five yards and a cloud of dust.
Bill was the best offensive tackle ever will be missed.

In 1978 I was hired as Bill Hanes' secretary. I recall an occasion when we disagreed on the spelling of a word. Prior to consulting a dictionary, we decided the person who had misspelled it would bring a coffeepot to the desk of the "winner" and pour coffee into their cup. Bill did that graciously!

I owe my very rewarding career as a lawyer to Bill Hanes. He hired me in 1982 as his paralegal to help with his work as Commissioner of Accounts. He taught me a lot about the law and encouraged me to go to law school. In fact, he was so adamant that I pursue law school that I thought that was his kind way of telling me that I was going to lose my job with him. Although my area of law practice was very different than his, the things I learned from him were very valuable and made me a better lawyer. Sadly I never got the chance to thank him properly.
Although Bill was 10 years older than I, we both grew up in Herndon and I recall watching Bill and his twin brother, Bob, play football for Herndon high school. He played fullback and his nickname was straight ahead Hanes. That’s pretty much how he approached everything in life. His family and mine were good friends, attended the same church and so I saw him often. When I finished law school he hired me, mentored me and we worked together for almost 40 years. We both retired to the northern neck and I had a great pleasure of playing golf and drinking bourbon with Bill over the last six years. He was one of my closest friends, my biggest supporter and a terrific person. In fact, he was one of the smartest and most generous people I’ve ever met. He made friends everywhere he went and he will be greatly missed.
