William L. Stone III's Obituary
William Leete Stone, III, Lt. Col. USA (Ret.), aged 90, passed away in Reston, VA on May 20, 2014.
He was born in 1924 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and grew up in Caldwell, New Jersey. After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1946, he served in the United States Army, including tours in Korea and Vietnam, until his retirement in 1974.
He married Mary Jane Atkinson in Japan in 1949. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with their four children, several of their 11 grandchildren and a few long-time friends. He was active in the Episcopal Church, feeding and assisting the homeless and the needy and heading a diocesan leadership program. A long-time resident of the Falcons Landing retirement community in Potomac Falls, Virginia, he was a member of the Resident Council and served as a volunteer in several programs. While at Falcons Landing, he discovered a love of art, becoming an accomplished portrait artist whose many drawings and paintings were exhibited there.
William Stone was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas Stone. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary Jane Stone, his son William Leete Stone IV of Tampa, Florida, his three daughters, Elizabeth Henry Stone (Marc Berman) of Florence, MA, Sarah Ann (Sally) Stone (Chris Hayden) of Alexandria, VA, and Suki Stone Carson (John) of Memphis, TN, his brother Arthur Douglas Stone of Sarasota, FL, a nephew, Terence Atkinson (Suzette Kern) of Springfield, VA, two nieces, Katherine Dagg (Kyle) of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Elizabeth Atkinson, and 11 adored grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at Falcons Landing, 20522 Falcons Landing Circle, Potomac Falls, VA on June 16, 2014 at 3:00 pm. A graveside service and interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
