William Sanford Ramsey's Obituary
Mr. William Sanford Ramsey, 87, Ret. Assistant Treasurer, Washington Gas, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2010 in Lansdowne, VA.
Mr. Ramsey was born on February 15, 1923 in Washington, DC to the late Jesse Jefferson Ramsey and the late Hilda Shaeffer Ramsey. He received his Bachelors and Masters degree in Commercial Science Accounting from Benjamin Franklin University.
Mr. Ramsey began his employment with Washington Gas Light Company in 1941 as a junior messenger until 1943 when he was called into active duty as an aviation cadet and served his country in the US Army Air Corps during WWII, flying B17 bombers. He was engaged in Northern France, Rhineland, and Ardennes.
In 1945, Mr. Ramsey rejoined Washington Gas and remained with the company for 43 years until his retirement in 1985.
A resident of Leisure World in Lansdowne, VA, he was a member of the Chapel at Leisure World and the American Legion.
He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Newman Ramsey, in 2007 and his granddaughter, Shelly Lynn Johnson.
Mr. Ramsey is survived by his daughter, Audrey Tracy Thomas of Sierra Vista, AZ; a grandson, Ronald Gordon Johnson, Jr. of Crownsville, MD, and three great grandchildren, Tyler, Colton, and Tara Raines. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Tom and Cheryl Heitfield, Rebecca, Chris, and Luke Makowski, Steven and Ashley Heitfield, and Tracy and Kevin Makowski.
Friends may call at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel; 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, VA 20175 on Thursday, June 24, 2010 where the family will receive guests from 6 to 8 pm. Services will follow at the funeral chapel on Friday, June 25th at 10:30 am with Rev. Wayne Snead officiating. Interment will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery in Rockville, MD.
