Barbara Daugherty's Obituary
Barbara M. Daugherty, 86, passed away March 20, 2009 in Leesburg, VA. Born in London, England, October 10, 1922 the eldest of six children, she is survived by her daughter, Ann Beckham and her son-in-law Gregory of South Riding, VA, three grandchildren, Catherine Hall of Charlotte, NC, Thomas Beckham of Arlington, VA and Jon Beckham of San Francisco, CA, one great-grandson, Jonathan Hall; and her brothers Geoffrey Whitworth of Dereham, Norfolk, England and Nigel Whitworth of Sydney, Australia. Her husband, Frank L. Daugherty, predeceased her in 2005.
Raised in London, Barbara joined the Women’s Land Army, known as the “Land Girls”, in World War II and was sent to work on farms in the English countryside to replace men who had gone to war. In 1946, she came to the U.S. as a war bride aboard the SS Washington, landing in New York on March 26.
Barbara was a devout Catholic and daily communicant at Holy Rosary Church in Clinton, MO for many years and St. Timothy parish in Chantilly, VA after moving to live with her daughter. At Holy Rosary she was the church secretary and the Altar Society Treasurer. She took care of the altar linens, helped with decorating the altar for Christmas, confirmation, Pentecost, and Easter, including the purchase of flowers; helped with the turkey dinners at the parish; cooked for the priests at times; and knew the history of the parish, which was a help to new parish priests as they moved to Clinton.
A funeral Mass will be said on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Timothy Catholic Church, Chantilly, VA and a memorial Mass will be said in Clinton, MO on Friday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m. with interment of the ashes at Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, MO.
