I was a student and Dr. Arnade’s class. He’s the one professor that I still remember at the University of South Florida (1996-1999). I still go back and read my own father‘s obituary, so to his children. I know you already know it, but your father was a great man that had a very big impact on a lot of people’s lives.
Sadden to hear the passing of Dr Arnade. My deepest condolences to the family. Grew up in San Antonio, Fla. and was a boyhood friend with sons Steve and Tony and so got to know their father. Remember his mind was like a butterfly that would not stay focused on anything for very long. He was a global thinker and supported civil rights during the early days when you risk repercussions. Did see him in recent years while on my annual family visits. He would drop in at my brother's auto repair shop. Still the same person I remember as a kid. Charles Arnade passed away possibly withouth knowing the real dimension of his contribution to Bolivian historiography. I cannot think about Bolivian history too far away from Charles' vision of it. Although we never met personally, we exchanged numerous messages via e-mail and we talked numerous times in the past four years. I have much to thank my "Professor Arnade". His was a life well lived. Dr. Arnade is an integral part of my memory of USF. He made history come alive, made us laugh, and taught us more than just history. This was in the early 60's when USF was just a fledgling university, but I have always cherished my memory of his classes. I first met Charlie when I was one of his students back in 1966 here at USF in his "American Idea" class. If Charlie's students didn't get some inkling of an "American idea" in his class, it certainly wasn't his fault. He was one of the most interesting, memorable professors I ever encountered. As a librarian in the USF library's Special Collections Department over the past 37 years I had the pleasure of seeing or talking to Charlie many times, usually when he was seeking some obscure bit of Florida history information. Dear Marjorie: I was so sorry to hear about Dr. Arnade. Although I met him late in his life and when you were ready to move from Florida, I greatly enjoyed visiting with you both. The gift of books that he made to me will be with me for many years. He will be missed for his very own self and for the many contributions he made to his discipline and to the community. Charlie was a presence for all the time I was at USF- my whole career-- and although I sometimes disagreed with him, I always knew him as a fighter for good causes, and as a real scholar. He was never one to accept administrative raison d'etat as an excuse for policies that were instrinsicly bad. He was a model of the academic work ethic, producing serious scholarship in contexts where it was needed and rare. And he was always civil and open. I will miss him.
