Dorothy Elizabeth Dunn Poland's Obituary
Mrs. DOROTHY (DOT) ELIZABETH DUNN POLAND, 98, of Aldie, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Dot was born Monday, December 13, 1926, in Middleburg, VA. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Eppa Dunn and the late Bessie Utterback Dunn. Her husband, Curtis Poland, predeceased her in 2015.
Dot was raised on a farm in Lenah, VA where she remained until her marriage to Curtis. Following her graduation from Aldie High School, she worked for the Red Cross in Alexandria, VA until the birth of her first child. Dot was active in the church and served as Director of The Girls’ Auxiliary (GAs) and Principal of Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs. With all four children in school, Dot returned to work outside the home. After 25 years of service, Dot retired from Loudoun County Public Schools where she worked as an elementary school teacher’s aide at Arcola and Sully Elementary schools. Dot’s hobbies included gardening, birdwatching, mowing, loving to beat family members at Rummy and following the Orioles. Those who knew her best understood not to call the house if a ball game was on TV; she wasn’t going to answer the telephone.
Dorothy leaves behind four children to cherish her memory: daughter, Linda Poland, of Aldie, VA; son, Curtis Dale Poland, and wife, Shirley, of Locust Dale, VA; daughter, Cathy O'Meara, of Leesburg, VA; and daughter, Julie Fritts, and husband, David, of The Dalles, OR. She also leaves a sister Betty Pearson of Aldie, VA; 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and other family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 am on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, VA.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am immediately following the public visitation hour. Pastor Troy Dickens of the Little River Baptist Church in Aldie and Pastor John Scott of the Our Savior’s Way Lutheran Church of Ashburn will be officiating.
Interment will follow at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, 40309 Little River Turnpike, Aldie, VA 20105.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be sent to Little River Baptist Church 40385 Braddock Rd. Aldie 20105, or to the Aldie Fire Department, 39459 Little River Turnpike, Aldie, VA 20105.
