Fred Gandt's Obituary
Beloved Educator, Athlete, and Family Man
Fred Gandt, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and celebrated athlete, passed away
peacefully in hospice care in Virginia, on June 14, 2025, at 2:20 p.m., surrounded by his two
daughters, Jennifer and Christy, and his beloved wife of 63 years, Grace. He was 89 years old.
Fred was born in 1938 in Niagara Falls, New York. He attended Salem College, where he earned a
Bachelor of Science in Business. A standout athlete, he played basketball and tennis at the
collegiate level. Fred's dedication and talent on the court earned him All-Conference Honors for
three consecutive years. He scored over 1,600 career points and, in 1960, ranked 15th in the nation
with an impressive 24.5 points per game. At the time of his induction into the college hall of fame, he
stood fourth all-time in scoring.
After graduating in 1961, Fred pursued a career in education, sharing his knowledge and passion by
teaching math, business, social studies, and driver's education. He spent decades shaping young
minds with patience, humor, and wisdom. In addition to teaching, Fred also coached basketball and
tennis, passing along his love for the game to countless student-athletes.
In addition to his accomplishments, he was a successful tennis competitor, winning many
championship awards.
Fred's greatest pride was his family. He was married to Grace Brown, his beloved wife and fellow
educator, for 63 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Jennifer and Christy, and were the
proud grandparents of Hannah, Mason, and Spencer.
Fred will be remembered for his humor, competitive spirit, and deep love for his family and
community. He lived a full and meaningful life-on the court, in the classroom, and at home.
A Celebration of Life will be held privately.
He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
