George Franklin Atwell, 93, of Milford, VA passed away on January 17, 2026. George was a native of Loudoun County, having grown up in Ryan on the dairy farm of his parents Charles Franklin and Eunice Atwell. He graduated from Le Read Obituary
George Atwell was a true exemplar, in Rotary, on the Leesburg Town Council, and in every step of his walk of life. Back in the late 1990’s when the Boy Scouts decided to begin an annual “Good Scout Award” to a man or woman who best exemplifies the honor, integrity, honesty, and ethical leadership that the Scouting movement has at its core, George was the first person to win that award. Farewell good friend. I will never forget you.
Our family's association with the Atwells began when my father, Ed, became an elementary school principal in Loudoun County in 1966. George became a good friend and mentor, and the two shared their passion for University of Maryland football and basketball. As my sister and I grew older, we became more friendly family-wise as my sister Jessica was a classmate of Dera (LCHS Class of '86) and we would occasionally enjoy a football Saturday in College Park, cheering on the Terps. George was a great man and cheerleader for so many great causes. He was very kind to me during my years at the Loudoun County Chamber. He was always smiling, friendly and loved his community. RIP George.
My family became neighbors with George and Marion in 2013. We were welcomed to our new home with two tiny pines planted at the end of our driveway which connects to the Atwell’s yard. Our family has grown and we have sent our oldest as men out to the world. Those pines grew in girth and stature reminding us of time passing and how precious our family time together was. Each new snowfall a wonder at how the trees had grown along with our children. George and Marion always had a smile and a kind word when our children played in the yard. Our youngest might say, “Where did the bunny go?” peeking through the fence. We chatted about the beautiful garden and how cozy and nice it would be there. Even our youngest at 3 knows the garden is where we see George and Marion for a chat. It is not just the place next door… these are people we hold dear in our hearts. Role models of the values and standards we aspire for them as they grow older. We could not have asked for kinder neighbors and we will miss George and Marion everyday.
George was the person I most respected in all my years in Rotary. Heck, most respected on this planet. A great Rotarian and a great man. We traveled to Rotary Conventions together for nearly 15 years. George, my right hand man, you are missed. I'm so sorry for your loss Marian.
I graduated LVHS in 1971. I wa in the 1st class of hippies, so by 11th grade, we didn’t look like the classical Virginia high students, and yes, some days some of us were high.
Mr. Atwell always treated me with professionalism, respect and with a friendly attitude. I will always remember him fondly.
When my Father was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital myvfamily called Mr. Atwell. He called my older brother and I into his office and said he had spoken with our Mother and she was following the ambulance there and we should go to our Aunt's home that evening. He was a very, very kind man, prayers uplifted for all of his family and friends, so very sad to hear of this loss.

Ron worked with him a number of years when he worked at the Loudoun Valley High School. He was a friend and a very compassionate man with everyone. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Mr. Atwell was our neighbor for many, many years. He was always so kind and generous, and he had a whistle that you could hear from miles away. I played with his daughter Amy a lot when I was growing up. I remember we had a disagreement one day. We were arguing about whose dad had the more stressful job. Having worked in the school system for 30 years, I now understand why Mr. Atwell's job was so stresful. Mr. Atwell was a wonderful neighbor and a good friend to my parents. Though our families have drifted apart, I have such good memories of the Atwell family. Losing him is like losing a little piece of my childhood. On behalf of my mother, I would like to express our deepest condolences to you on your loss. Mom's health will prevent us from attending the visitation. Please know that we are praying for Mrs. Atwell and your entire family.
