George Franklin Atwell's Obituary
George Franklin Atwell, 93, of Milford, VA passed away on January 17, 2026. George was a native of Loudoun County, having grown up in Ryan on the dairy farm of his parents Charles Franklin and Eunice Atwell.
He graduated from Leesburg High School and the University of Maryland before beginning his career in Loudoun County Public Schools. He taught math and business classes at Loudoun County High School. He was principal of Hamilton Elementary and Loudoun Valley High School before becoming assistant superintendent in charge of finance and support. In 1987, he retired after 31 years. Later he worked at Leesburg Today and Loudoun Funeral Chapel. He was on Leesburg Town Council for 1 1/2 terms.
George was a 58-year active member of Rotary International. He spent time as District Governor of District 8990 and traveling overseas inoculating children against polio. He was a member of Leesburg Rotary, Leesburg Day Break, Caroline Rotary and Stafford Rotary clubs.
He and his wife of 69 years, Marian Beazley Atwell, raised their two daughters, Dera Kurnos (Joe) and Amy Goodrich (Mike) in Leesburg before moving to Milford, VA in 2005.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters and spouses, three grandchildren, Jack, Josh and Ellie Goodrich, a niece Patricia Norton (Bob) and nephew Bernie Gallagher.
His parents and sister, Evelyn Gallagher, predeceased him.
A viewing at Storke Funeral Home in Bowling Green, VA will be held 6-8pm on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
A second viewing will be held at Loudoun Funeral Chapel from 4 to 6 pm on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
Graveside service will be held in Union Cemetery in Leesburg, VA Friday, February 6 at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Rotary International or Milford Presbyterian Church.
