Gregory Thomas Lyons' Obituary
Gregory Thomas Lyons, 66, passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2024 in Ashburn, VA.
Greg was born in Alexandria, VA to Ronald and Janet Lyons on May 4, 1957. He grew up in Springfield, VA attending local schools and graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1975. He attended George Mason University receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Business with a major in Accounting in 1980.
He worked briefly for a local CPA firm and then began a 35 year career at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). In 1987, he earned his Master of Business Administration from George Mason University and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation in 1990. While working at SAIC he met his future wife Cathy. Initially living in Springfield, they settled in Ashburn a few years later.
Greg retired from SAIC as VP for Finance in 2015 and easily transitioned to spending more time at his second home at Lake Gaston. Greg and Cathy found time to attend family reunions, visit many national parks, and travel internationally. In retirement Greg’s affinity for accounting led him to preparing tax returns at a local CPA firm and providing financial guidance to friends and family.
He believed in honesty, fairness, and being a good neighbor. He cherished his wife, stepsons, family, close friends, and his dog Maddie. After his cancer diagnosis in 2020, Greg fought valiantly allowing him to travel, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy several more special years with Cathy. While we will miss him dearly, we are thankful for our time with him and that he is resting in peace.
Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Janet Lyons, his stepson Christopher Beech, brother-in-law Antonio (Tony) Lara, father-in-law David Wilson and mother-in-law Frances Wilson.
Greg is survived by his wife Cathy Lyons; stepson, Stephen Beech (Kyley) and grandson Walker of Leesburg, VA; sister Linda Lara of Springfield, VA; niece, Tarina Lara (Reggie) of Fairfax, VA; brother-in-law David Wilson (Nancy-Lynn); sisters-in-law Patti O’Neill (Bob) and Lori Wilson and many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Visitation with family and friends will be held from 10 am to 12 pm on Friday April 19, 2024 at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel; 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, VA. A reception celebrating Greg’s life will be held the same day from 1 pm – 3 pm at the Bungalow Lake House; 46116 Lake Center Plaza, Cascades, VA.
