Harry Ronald McLeod's Obituary
Harry Ronald McLeod, age 87, passed away on September 2, 2025, at his home in Leesburg, VA, surrounded by family.
Ron McLeod was born in Laurel, MS, on September 11, 1937, to Harry Ratcliff McLeod and Mary Ella McRae McLeod. He graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA. He received his BA degree from American University in Washington, D.C. He received his degree as an M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1968 and completed his residency there.
He joined Dr. Michael Willougby and for over 50 years they practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Leesburg. In 1988 he delivered healthy twins in a frozen embryo birth. This was the first known case of twins being born with this method in the United States.
Under the auspices of the Governor of Bolivar Province in the Andean Highlands of Ecuador, he led and financed medical missions. He was accompanied by his wife, dear friends from the local medical community, and in-country doctors and volunteers. The missions provided free medicines, eyeglasses, canes, water purification kits, and hearing aids. Over 13 years they helped 87,000 people. This pioneering program received a special award from the Governor.
He also donated water purification kits to facilities in Afghanistan for children whose mothers were imprisoned. In addition, he provided special medicines for the Wolong Panda Kindergarten in China.
Dr. McLeod is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Phyllis Smith McLeod; his children Virginia Parkin (Chris), Harry Ronald McLeod (Amanda), and Kaitlyn Meilahn (Eric). Also by his eight grandchildren (Christina Cummings, Casey Cummings, Chad Cummings, Caylee Cummings, Rhys Meilahn, Ruby Meilahn, Rhett Meilahn, Reid Meilahn); one great grandchild (Theodore). He is also survived by his sister-in-law Margaret Smith Sears, several nieces and nephews, and his lifelong best friend Dr. William Silberman. He was predeceased by his daughter Phyllis Ella McLeod.
The family held a private service.
