Herbert J. Smith, III, Lieutenant Colonel, US Army, Retired, 68, of Lansdowne, Virginia died on Tuesday, May 4th at Loudoun Hospital. He was born May 27th 1941 in Saginaw, Michigan. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1965. As a highly decorated career military officer, he served two tours in Vietnam and various other posts including Germany, Korea and Hawaii before his last assignment at the Pentagon as Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. After retiring in 1985, he joined Hill & Knowlton, Inc., an international public relations firm as Director, Military Affairs and Vice President. In 1988, he formed his own consulting firm, HJS International, Inc... He enjoyed reading, cooking and helping those less fortunate than himself. He was a Mason affiliated with Lodge No. 17, Washington, DC.
Herb is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Carole of Lansdowne; two children: Caroline Marie Nosal (Bill) of Herndon, VA, Peter Herbert Smith (Sarah) of Chevy Chase, MD; his father: Herbert J. Smith Jr. of Alma, MI; a sister: Shirley Bismark of Saginaw, MI; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. His mother, Helen Courneya Smith, predeceased him.
A Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10:45 am on Friday, September 17th 2010 at the Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer, Virginia. Interment will follow with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
