James Edward Humphrey's Obituary
On Wednesday, October 25th, 2023, James Edward Humphrey died tragically in a car accident, just miles from his Brambleton, VA home. James, or Jimmy, as his beloved grandchildren referred to him, was traveling home from a work trip when the taxi driving him home from the airport was struck head on. He was 66 years old.
A native of Connecticut, he was a graduate of the University of Connecticut, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Finance. At the time of his death, he was still working in the leasing industry, where he spent his entire career working for various companies, Odessa being his home for the last 15 years. Everyone who worked with him loved him, many recently referring to him as their mentor and work dad. From an early age, Jim exhibited a strong work ethic and desire to provide for those closest to him.
Above all else, Jimmy was the epitome of a family man. Everything he did was for those closest to him, family, and friends alike. He was the rock, the calm, patient, optimistic, and devoted supporter that everyone who loved him relied on. Jim always showed up for those he cared about, often doing acts of kindness for others that would not be discovered until years later. When he wasn’t working tirelessly to support his family, his greatest joy was watching his children, and later his grandchildren, play sports. Jim was at every soccer game, horse show, baseball game, and dance class. He and his wife, Sue, recently relocated to Virginia to be close to their grandchildren, already busy picking them up from school, taking them to the pool, and watching them play sports.
Jim leaves behind by his loving wife, Sue, of 43 years, his son Bobby Humphrey and daughter Jill Gallagher. He will be deeply missed by his son in law Peter Gallagher and his grandchildren Jack (9) and Isla (5) Gallagher. On the Humphrey side of the family, he leaves behind his loving mother Edith, her husband Wayne, along with his siblings Kevin, Kurt, Jeff, and Kim. Spouses and many nieces and nephews of the Humphrey family will miss him immensely. On Sue’s side of the family, he leaves behind his sister-in-law Diane and her husband Jay, brother-in-law Chris, along with his nieces and nephew.
A service will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Leesburg VA, on Saturday, November 18th, 2023, at 10:00 AM. Immediately following the service, attendees are invited back to his daughter Jill’s house for a reception. Details about the reception will be available at the service or to those who message Jill directly. All are welcome to come and raise a glass of his favorite Chardonnay to toast a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers, we are asking those interested to please donate to a cause that honors his memory, The Open Goal Project. Jim was always a supporter of youth sports, especially soccer. As a soccer dad, he would often be found driving teammates to practice, being a cheerleader for all, and many times covering fees for those who needed assistance.
