JOAN BARBARA ELWELL's Obituary
Joan Barbara Elwell, 88 of Ashburn, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022.
The daughter of the late Gustav and Martha Boenitsch, she was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 12, 1934. She grew up in the Washington Metropolitan area, where she graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, in 1952. She graduated from Mary Washington College in 1956 with a degree in mathematics and as a member of Chi Beta Phi. She worked for a short period at the Army Map Service in Washington, D.C., as a mathematician before marrying her late husband Richard Brans Elwell in 1959. Thereafter, Joan remained at home to raise their three children.
She leaves her family to cherish her memory, including her son, Robert M. Elwell of Herndon, VA; daughters, Karen E. Elwell of Round Hill, VA, and Barbara A. Carmichael of Leesburg, VA; daughter-in-law, Manami Elwell; son-in-law, James Carmichael; and three grandchildren, Richard, Emma, and Jason.
Joan loved the ocean, where she and her late husband spent much of their retired lives. She liked to sing, work in her garden, read, do jigsaw puzzles, and have a cup of tea in the morning. She was also known to sneak out occasionally to the casinos.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 19, 2022, from 6 to 8 pm, at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, VA 20175.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at Quantico National Cemetery located at 18424 Joplin Road Triangle, Virginia 22172.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Victory School, Washington, D.C.
