John F Thornell III's Obituary
JOHN FRANCIS THORNELL, III, 80, of Leesburg, VA, sadly passed on March 16, 2026.
Born on March 7, 1946, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, to parents John F. Thornell Jr. and Pamela C. Thornell, John was the eldest of eight children and grew up in a close-knit family that shaped his lifelong values of dedication, integrity, and service.
John proudly served his country for many years, beginning in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and continuing in the United States Marine Corps, where he rose to the rank of Colonel. Over the course of his distinguished military career, he held numerous leadership roles, commanded aviation units, and earned multiple honors including the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Following his military service, John built a successful career in the private sector, working in Information Technology (IT) with Apple, Intershop, Versata, HMS, and as Vice President of Loch Harbour Group before starting his own company, the Avenal Group. He was also an accomplished scholar, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science and advanced degrees in National Security and Strategic Studies. He was a published author and engaged member of his community, serving for 10 years as the Chairman of the Toys for Tots campaign of Loudoun County and 15 years as board Member, Secretary, and President of the River Creek Men’s Golf Association.
John is survived by his family including his beloved wife of 59 years, Linda Lee Thornell, sister Kathleen (John) Bowings, brothers Stephen (Vickie), Mark (Barbara), Joseph (Kerry) and many nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbors. John is survived by his beloved dogs Hondo and Annie. John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James and Timothy, and sister Candice. John had many wonderful dogs who also preceded him in death: Misty, Duke, Stoney, Penny, Barron, Brandy, Boggie, Skyler, and Remi
The Thornell family will receive guests for visitation from 1:00PM to 2:00PM on Friday March 27, 2026 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Cir. SE, Leesburg, VA 20175.
A Catholic prayer service for John will be held on March 27, 2026, at 2:00PM at Loudoun Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, Guide Dogs of America, and Operation Homefront.
