Dear Teddy and Family, my deepest condolences are with you during the untimely loss of your Laura. I’d like to share some of my fondest memories of her.”Beaver”, as we called her, was my fondest memory of high school back in 1979-1983. Playing on any of her teams was the best, in particular, basketball was the most colorful and memorable. Although it was over 30 years ago, I can still feel the excitement of basketball season as if I were 15 years old again. The practices, games, bus rides, getting dressed up on game day, which she insisted we do. Our favorite pre game warm-up song back then started like, “Hip hop the hippie the hippie to hip hop…yes Rapper’s Delight. I can visualize Beaver’s intensity and anxiety as she coached our games. Her stern game face, never losing the intensity and passion to motivate us. And there was the dreaded, “On the line”, when she said that during practice, you knew we messed up. That meant running suicides until we dropped from exhaustion. Those were the days! Beaver found her calling as a coach and educator, not many people reach that stage in life, the perfect fit in a career, but I believe she did. She made us want to be faster, stronger, better, and kinder, yes, kinder. Not only did she train athletes, she developed and nurtured fairness and kindess. She was the best mother to all of her players. Beaver was directly responsible for helping me get through my miserable high school years, the only thing I looked forward to back then was playing on her team. I thank her for the person I am today, thank you for calling my parents when you knew I was smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, and misbehaving, thank you for taking the time to help a student, and I know I’m just one of the thousands that you rescued. I’ve tried to emulate your techniques, your secrets, your powerful ways to make the team believe in you, but coaching my daughter’s team turned out to be disastrous, I don’t know how you did it! I was so happy to reconnect with you when I was working at Bethesda Naval Hospital and your sister was in labor and I was her nurse. You were such a proud auntie!! Beaver, rest in peace, knowing that you made a difference in this world.
