Dear Mary, Amy and Jim,

I last saw Matt several years ago in Smithfield. He had spotted me from a distance and came over to introduce himself. What a delight it was to be able to reconnect with the “all grown up now” Matt and to see his familiar smile! I will never forget us all piling into the car and heading for Cameron, Hillsville and other treasure-hunting destinations. Those were the best of times, and I know your hearts are broken. Matt was such a gentle soul, and until you see him again. I hope that memories of the joyful times you shared with him will be a comforting blessing.

I just discovered today that Matt passed away 8 months ago and am in such complete shock... My mother and I had been friends with him for several years and were concerned he hadn't returned any of our texts or calls in a while. My mother realized she had spelled his last name wrong and when she found his correct spelling found this obitiuary... Matt was such a good friend to us and this is so devastating... He really loved Rusty so much as well, he used to talk about him all the time... If any of his friends or family would like to reach out to me, my email is [email protected] - its so hard to find closure from this, he was seriously such an amazing guy and so young...

Matt was the very first patent examiner I met when my supervisor gave me a tour of the office on my first day. Matt continued to be a constant presence in my examining career as a mentor and a friend. Every time I came to Matt with a question, he always took the time to listen and tried his best to help. Listening, caring and treating others with respect and love were some of the great qualities that made Matt such an exceptional mentor and human being. I will surely miss him.

He introduced himself to me as Matthew, and I asked do you go by Matt or Matthew? He said "you pick," and then he said "I like Matt." We are blessed to have known him for the short amount of time that we did. He stumbled across our neighborhood party by chance (while walking a couple of friends home), and we became new friends. We'd like to share these recent pictures of him, because they illustrate the Matt that we got to know. He was genuine, kind, caring, giving, and fun. We send our deepest condolences.
