I had talked with Max on May 25, the Sunday before Memorial Day. I think it was the only time he didn’t seem happy. He called to tell me he would be starting a new job – for which he was happy, of course – but it was an hours’ drive away. That meant he’d be away from his family for a full 10 hours, if not more during each working day.
He would call me on no special occasion, but to let me know what my ‘little bro’ was doing and ask how I was. Max was my step brother. Yes, he was younger than I, but I hardly considered him my ‘little brother.’ He had accomplished so much.
When given an option to ‘stay the same’ or do something with his life, he chose the Navy. He worked hard at whatever he did. He did more to learn as much as he could to better his situation.
The times that I’ve stayed at his home, I always felt ‘at home.’ He and Louanna were a perfect complement to each other and it showed in every way. They were fun and serious. There was always a joke or story and a time to talk and listen. Maddie and Maya were always happy, smiling, laughing, active and quiet – when necessary.
He was a super man.
And I will miss his phone calls.
