Raymond John Husebo, Jr.'s Obituary
Raymond J. Husebo of Ashburn Virginia died April 17, 2011 at the age of 83 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and cancer.
He was born June 14, 1927 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Martha Voussuer Husebo and Raymond J. Husebo, Sr both of Green Bay. His father was a reserve Army officer which caused the family to move to Tacoma Washington during World War II. Upon graduating from Clover Park High School there he was drafted by the Army in 1945 during final weeks of WWII, later reenlisting and extending his service to include a 2 year tour in Korea. In 1948, he was honorably discharged, leaving the service with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He returned to Wisconsin and using the GI Bill he was able to obtain a Bachelors and Masters in History from the University of Wisconsin (UW) in pursuit of a career teaching history. His first teaching job was in Fort Atkinson Wisconsin (1953-1955) where he also met his wife Jane Ann McMicken. From there he taught history in Kenosha Wisconsin for most of the late 50s. He returned to Madison and UW to study for his PhD in Education focusing on School Administration. In the 1963 he was offered a position as high school principal in Antigo, WI and soon found himself the acting Superintendent of Schools when the current Superintendent suffered a heart attack. In 1966, this experience positioned him to be selected as School Superintendent in Ashland, WI from where he oversaw a huge geographic district including local Indian reservations. In 1969 the family moved to Vestal, NY where he became and remained School Superintendent until his retirement in 1982. Throughout his career, he was known for his skills in dealing with crisis having navigated a wide range of challenges including the social unrest of the 70’s and the first Taylor Law strike in the state of New York. He had a reputation for being tough but always fair in dealing with frequent budget crises and associated labor union negotiations.
After retirement he lived in Vestal and Endicott NY and spent many years traveling by sea, land and air to practically every region in the world sans Antarctica. In 2000 he moved to Ashburn, VA to live with his eldest son Eric and wife Della’s family and had an opportunity to bond with many of his grandchildren that lived locally.
Always the avid reader and scholar of history, he spent his final years surrounded by his personal “library” of books and music, and pictures of the many places he’d travelled. He was also a lifetime Green Bay Packer fan having personally witnessed their glory days of the 30s, 40s and 60s and was very excited about their most recent super bowl success.
He is survived by his younger sisters Jeannine Barras of Mequon, WI and Carla Wakid of Mundelein, IL and his ex-wife Jane and their four sons: Eric, Jon and Paul of Ashburn and Kurt of Bellefonte, PA. He is also survived by ten (10) grandchildren: Sean, Shannon, Meaghan, Kirsten, Kyndall, Ian, Alec, Erin, Anja and Ethan.
Services and interment will be held privately.
