Robert Hayes' Obituary
Mr. Robert Emmett Hayes, 76, of Lovettsville, VA died on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at home. Bob, known by many as “Red” was born June 13, 1933 in Everett, Massachusetts to Winnifred O. (Hamilton) and William J. Hayes. He was the brother of Edward J. Hayes of Stoneham MA, the late William K. Hayes of Appomattox VA, and the late Gloria Hayes of Everett MA. He was the former husband of Margaret (O'Rourke) Pelton, currently of Salt Lake City, UT.
For the last thirty-one years he was the husband of Jeannette Hayes of Lovettsville. In addition to his wife, three daughters and a son survive him: Susan Silva of Salem MA, Sandi Romero of Salt Lake City UT, Peggie Hayes of Watertown MA, and Mike Wood. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Margaret Merchant, three brothers-in-law, Dr. Denny, Joel, and Stanley Merchant and sisters-in-law, Adele and Wendy Merchant; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, other family and friends.
Bob attended MIT after enlisting and serving 10 years in the United States Air Force. He obtained the rank of Captain before his discharge. He held several jobs including Air Traffic Controller with the FAA. Mr. Hayes was also affectionately known as the 'mayor of Ropp Lane.'
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at St. James United Church of Christ located at 10 East Broad Way Lovettsville, VA 20180 with The Rev. Don Prange officiating.
Interment will be held privately at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Hayes memory to St. James United Church of Christ.
