Wayne Douglas Zajac's Obituary
Wayne Douglas Zajac, 76 of Ashburn, Virginia passed away after a two year struggle with a neurodegenerative disease on Thursday, December 7, 2017, at Ashby Ponds. Born Tuesday, July 8, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland he was the son of Joseph John and Mary Ella (Rhea) Zajac. He was the husband of Ann Elizabeth (Silex) Zajac. Wayne is a 1963 graduate of Gettysburg College who later dedicated his professional life to the military and government. He served in the Army from 1963 to 1965 which included Armor School training at Fort Knox, deployment to Germany as a tank platoon leader in the 3rd Armor Division and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Meade before retiring from active duty. Subsequent civilian jobs included positions at the National Science Foundation and the Department of Labor while also spending the next 26 years as part of the Army National Guard. During his time with the National Guard, he served as a rifle company commander, intelligence officer, infantry operations/training officer and earned a Master’s degree from the Defense Intelligence College (Washington, DC) before retiring as a full Colonel in 1993. He survived by his wife Ann and two daughters: Catherine (William) Coppedge and Christina (Josh) Freeman, sister Joan (Karl) Silex, brother Pastor Gregory (Melinda) Zajac and three grandchildren: Christopher Coppedge, Jason Coppedge and John Connor Freeman. A Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday December 12, 2017 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 605 West Market Street Leesburg, Virginia 20176. A viewing will be held from 10:00 AM until the time off the services. Interment will follow at 2:00PM in Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, VA. Arrangements are being handled by Loudoun Funeral Chapels, 158 Catoctin Cr. SE, Leesburg, VA. Online condolences may be expressed at www.loudoufuneralchapel.com.
